The Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Current, Health and Safety legislation is very clear that employers have legal obligations to maintain Portable Electric equipment in a safe condition. (Electricity At Work Act Regulation 4 and 16, Health and Safety Executive Guidance Note GS27 and PM 32) and that combined inspection and testing of portable appliances is necessary since not all dangerous faults on equipment can be found with just a visual inspection. Even though a Portal Appliance is OK visually you must still get it tested and prove that you have done so. During your company risk assessment you must determine a regular inspection period. Also a test should be carried out after any repairs, modifications, or other similar work.
